Our mission and Philosophy

Chem 143D is an advanced organic synthesis lab that aims to expose students to various concepts and tools available to the modern organic chemist. The goal of this lab is to better train students for the “real world” outside the students labs. Modern organic chemistry demands efficient synthesis to minimize costs and protect the environment. We believe that efficient synthesis originates from understanding the fundamental physical-organic principals of reactions.

This course was conceived as Pfizer scientists and UCSD faculty jointly identified a need for improving the training of chemistry undergraduates by exposing them to the research methods used in drug development laboratories. A Generous donation from Pfizer allowed the creation of this course that was taught for the first time during spring 04.
